Pavlo Poliakov is an Expert Software Engineer and team lead for Kreditech’s MonedoNow Mexico. His broad expertise partly involves developing solutions by consulting with users and reviewing problem spots. This Ukraine native loves urban history and enjoys going on city tours, learning new things about Hamburg – his home since 2015. While Pavlo describes himself as a fan of public transport, he is particularly proud of finally receiving his German driving license.
What time of the working day is your favorite and why?
I prefer mornings over evenings. At the early hours of the workday, my mailbox is not yet jammed full with unread emails. It’s a really great time to lay out short term goals for the day.
What is a typical day like for you at Kreditech?
I arrive at the office between 09:00 and 10:00. I usually have a clear idea what task I want to tackle first. Making sure I get the carrot from the fruit basket in the office kitchen is also a priority for this modern-day software engineer. At 12:30, we have a team meeting to discuss the open issues from the previous and current day that need resolving. Then I have lunch at one of the many great and affordable restaurants located in the neighborhood of Kreditech’s head office. Usually there will be some more meetings to attend in the second half of the day. Around 16:00, I take a coffee break at the rooftop lounge. The view of Hamburg is spectacular from here. I then spend the last hours completing final tasks. I usually head home at about 18:30.
Do you have any tips for applicants?
My advice is mainly for the engineering applicants. It is especially relevant that you show you possess initiative. Tell us how you achieve results. We certainly do not expect that you know everything. However, we are interested in how you are able to find answers or suggest a solution to an issue. This is a quality I most value in our engineers. We don’t know everything, but we are ready to investigate and suggest the solutions.
How do you balance your career and family?
When my family needs me I’m there for them, even if it is during office hours. Meanwhile, when my work needs some extra input from me, I gladly help even if I’m on vacation. I think when you really like what you do, you are able to not only balance but incorporate every aspect of work and life.
What do you miss most about your home city?
My home city is Kharkiv and I miss the great hair-care services. The quality there is both excellent and affordable. The services often include a specialist working on your hair for an hour and a half. Your beard would be wrapped in a hot towel, massaged with special oils then styled with a straight razor while you sip on complimentary whisky. All for EUR 14, including tips!
