Could you describe in one word what it’s like working at Kreditech?
Is there a specific project you are personally particularly proud of?
I am quite proud of Project Octopus. We abstracted away a big data bank onto Hadoop on a Mesos cluster and used Spark for processing. Such implementations significantly decreased the time for building and training our data science machine learning models. These technologies were being introduced in Kreditech for the first time and it was a great feeling to be a part of the vanguard.
How do you describe your work to your grandmother/family/friends?
I am a fortune teller! I predict the future using data.
What was the worst thing you did as a kid?
I set a room on fire. My silly 13 year-old self was always fascinated by cigarette lighters. So one day, while playing with one of them I decided to burn some clothes, on a clothing line at the neighbor’s house, with whom we shared a terrace.
So what advice would you give your 13 year old self?
“Fire spreads fast!”. – Asfandyar Malik
“There is no secret ingredient”. – anonymous
Describe your biggest challenge at Kreditech?
I am very competitive but being surrounded by so many experienced and smart people at Kreditech has made me modest. There is still a lot to learn and a long way to go.
What is your fondest memory from your time at the company?
In the summer of 2015, I went with some colleagues for stand-up paddling at the Alster. That is a memory I greatly cherish. It is even more memorable because I DROPPED….Davide’s raybans in the Alster after our paddle boards collided.
Is there a specific reason you pursue your current “field of interest”?
I have had mystical attraction to Computers, ever since I was a young boy. The gratification, procured from solving complex, challenging problems is what drives me.
Who has been your greatest inspiration?
My elder brother Shehryar Ashraf Malik. He inspired me, mentored me and taught me how to follow my dreams. I would not be the man I am today if it weren’t for the values my brother imparted in me. May his soul rest in peace.
Do you have a preferred time in the working day?
I love the mornings because my productivity is high and possibilities are endless.
